Thar Engine Specifications
This is the more affordable version of the Thar 4x4 – almost Rs. 2.33 lakh cheaper in the petrol-automatic hardtop guise at the time of the launch. The 2WD model is recommended for those who are not looking for a hardcore 4x4 and instead, want a rugged-looking vehicle with good road presence and a unique proposition. The Thar 2WD is available in three variants and with two engine options.
Appearance-wise, the only visual change is that there is no 4x4 badge on the rear-three-quarters of the Thar 2WD. Mahindra has also added two new paint options – Blazing Bronze and Everest White.
4WD Diesel Automatic
The Thar 4x4 with the diesel automatic powertrain makes for a versatile off-roader. You get the efficiency of a diesel engine with the convenience of an automatic gearbox for everyday driving. The powertrain is quite capable, too. It includes Mahindra’s proven 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine with a six-speed torque converter automatic. This version of the Thar offers strong performance along with good fuel efficiency.
The 2023 model is aeons ahead of the previous generation Thar, be it design, quality, performance, interiors, features, or overall comfort levels-wise. This diesel automatic version makes sense for those who are looking for a lifestyle vehicle that they can use every day in traffic and on the highways.
Thar Convenience & Technology
Three USPs of the Mahindra Thar:
- The Thar stands out wherever it goes. It has plenty of road presence, looks fit for its purpose, and with so much potential for both visual and performance modes, makes for a great blank canvas for the adventurous kind.
- Naturally, the Thar is incredibly capable when you take it off the road. It has huge, knobbly tyres, a fairly modern 4x4 system with low range, and impressive ground clearance and approach angle.
- The petrol-powered Thar is surprisingly quick. The 2.0-litre, 150bhp and 320Nm-producing, mStallion engine is coupled with an automatic six-speed torque convertor gearbox and offers thrilling performance.
Two features missing in the Mahindra Thar:
- Rear-view camera.
- Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay.
Thar Safety
- In terms of safety features, the Thar comes with driver and front passenger airbags, ESP, seatbelt warning, anchor points for child seats, over-speed warning, and central locking.
- The Mahindra Thar comes with a four-star rating for both adult and child occupants in Global NCAP’s crash tests.
Thar Exterior & Interior Styling
Postives:
- The Thar’s interior may seem basic at first but it’s a huge step forward in the right direction when compared to the old model. The design is simple and functional for the most part with a high-set dashboard, almost vertical front windshield, and narrow A-pillars.
- Mahindra has retained some of the old-school features for traditional jeep lovers with the Thar – the fuel lid that only opens by sliding the key in, fasteners for the bonnet, and door restraints in fabric.
- The quality and fit finish are good for the price, whereas the top-spec variants are well-kitted out.
- The features include a touchscreen audio system, steering with multifunction controls, cruise control, lumbar support, electric mirrors, and a height-adjustable driver seat.
- As for space and comfort, the front seats are large and comfortable.
Negatives:
- The space at the rear is only acceptable for two adults over short distances.
- Even the access to the rear bench seat is restricted because of the three-door configuration.
